LUDHIANA: The project of sterilization of dogs - that was expected to begin on Sunday - has once again been postponed to February 25. "The representatives of an NGO, who were likely to begin the project, are admitted in CMC Hospital due to some illness, because of which the project had to be delayed," said AS Sekhon, chief, health and sanitation wing.
The NGO - Vet Society for Animal Welfare and Rural Development - has planned to bring in all the equipment to carry out the procedure soon. While MC commissioner GK Singh informed that they would begin the project on Sunday itself on a small scale, mayor Harcharan Singh Gohlawaria was in favour of starting the project in a big way. "We have decided on a proper inauguration of the hospital for sterilization of dogs, and the project will begin on a large scale, so that we can finish it off soon," said Sekhon.
MC has also planned to hasten the project by instructing the NGO members to finish the task within a year. Earlier, it was decided that the team would work for almost two years in the entire city. It has been learnt that there would be four operation theatres in the hospital, and 80 dogs will be sterilized daily. MC has estimated 25,000 dogs to be sterilized, and rupees two crores have been allocated for it. "
